5 pool records were the highlight of our meet at Canisius this evening. The 200 Medley Relay(Koenig, Murphy, Baker, Robinson), the 200 Free (Mike Dansa broke it in the event then Yi Liu broke it leading off the 800 free relay), 500 Free (Ethan Rowan), 3 Meter Dive (Mike Murphy) and the 800 Free Relay(Liu, Martin, Dansa, Rowan).
We had a solid contingent of alumni/parents in the crowd to watch the Bonnies come away from final exams to collect a 171-72 victory over an improving Canisius squad. Now it is a few days of putting their noses to the grindstone before sending them home for the Christmas Holiday.

Akron Zippy Invite
We are back from Akron with a piece of the tri-force that the team so covets!!! A 3rd place finish was the result with SBU actually edging out UB in the swimming portion of the meet by a mere 3 points!!! We did not bring our divers due to the unusual diving format that does not permit them much time to work so we opted to have them stay home and advance themselves through practice. Swimmer of the Meet for the Bonnies is Dawid Kundzik who had a fantastic weekend with a 20.87 in the 50 free (2nd place), winning the 100 fly in 49.93 and finishing 2nd in the 100 free with a time of 46.02 but also anchoring our 400 Free Relay with a blazing 44.74 to help the relay to a 2nd place finish with a very solid in-season time of 3:05.42. We learned a lot from this meet and now know the areas that need to be focused on in order to prepare for the A-10 Championships in February. Cleveland State Wrap-up
Best descriptive would be "we had our chances"!! The meet started the way we hoped it would with a 1-3 finish in the 400 Medley Relay, then an expected 2-3 finish in the 1000. The 200 free was an event we had hoped to have a shot at winning but we ended up 1-2-3 (Rowan 1:43.47, Dansa 1:45.40, Murphy 1:45.98) which served as a huge boost only to be equalized by the Cleveland State 1-2 in the 50 in the next event. The 200 IM served as another event that we needed to take advantage of, and did!! Yi Liu finished 1st with a season best time of 1:57.53. We were looking pretty solid going into the second diving break. Our hopes were to win one of the boards but did not accomplish that. This put the need on us to win two individual events out of the final 5 events and we could not come up with the necessary finishes to get the job done and to get it to the 400 Free Relay to decide the meet. A tough touch-out in the 100 free where Dawid Kundzik lead for 99 & 1/2 yards of the 100 yard race seemed to take the wind out of the sails. The final score of 136-105 left me feeling a little confused as we had a very solid first half of the meet to be followed by a less than stellar second half of the meet. Humphrey Hill Run this Morning

The run up Humphrey Hill took place this morning!!! The tradition that started back in the mid 90's to send a message to a team that needed to race each other in practice, had its 2010-2011 installment completed today. On a cold October morning with the temp slightly above freezing the 1 3/4 mile ascent up the 1000 vertical feet mountain was won by freshman Mike Hartwell in a time of 12:30!!! It is always entertaining to see the curious looks from the passers by who wonder what could be going on!!!

Pitt Summary
Here is the link to our Pitt results. We had many decent swims for where we are at this point but never posed a threat to the Panthers. Highlights would be our 3:28.3 in the 400 Med Relay which is our fastest ever for this early and David Paccapaniccia current sophmore (Pitt transfer) had some solid swims after not competing for over a year and a half.

Ray Bussard

Ray Bussard, the former Tennessee Men's Swimming Coach passed away last night after being in poor health. Ray was a great friend to SBU Swimming where he and former SBU Coach Kevin McNamee forged a solid friendship. Coach Bussard was a fixture at the St. Lawrence Swim Camp that Kevin directed and also spent many summers at the SBU Swim Camp back in the 90's.

After tallying the donation amounts from the CF walk this past weekend, that the entire team participated in, it was determined that the men's swimming & diving team tied with the baseball team for the most amount donated!!! This entitles the team to give Coach Fiske and his assistant a dryland/weight training workout of our choice.

Men's Swimming & Diving bulks up roster for 2010-11
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Men's swimming head coach Sean McNamee announced the signing of four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent and three more to grant-in-aid for the 2010-11 season.
Michael Burud, James Martin, Stephen Melchiorre and Patrick O'Donnell signed National Letters of Intent to swim with the Bonnies. John McMahon comes to St. Bonaventure after competing the past two seasons at the University of New Orleans, while freshman David Paccapaniccia also transferred in from the University of Pittsburgh in January, but did not compete so he will have four years of eligibility. Mike Hartwell, John Mackiewicz and Bob Rutkowski will also be joining the Bonnies in the Fall.
Diver, Dominick Butts-Ealy transfers from the University of New Orleans as well.
Burud, a Red Hook, N.Y. native, comes from a family of swimmers – all three of his older siblings are either currently competing or have finished their careers as collegiate swimmers. In the pool, Burud has had quite a high school career of his own, finishing with a time of 46.64 in the 100 free, 58.31 in the 100 breast and 51.57 in the 100 fly. As a freshman, he swam in the Empire State Games, winning gold medals in the 100-yard free and 400-yard medley relays. In all, after swimming at the Games all four years in high school he has earned seven gold and four silver medals. Burud also earned a spot in the Speedo Championship Sectional Meet in each of his four years.
A sophomore transfer for New Orleans, Butts-Ealy finished sixth in the one-meter dive and 7th in the three-meter at the Sun Belt Conference Championship. He posted season-high scores of 299.85 and 304.00 in the one and three-meter, respectively. As a senior at Overland High School in Denver, Colo., he took fourth place at states and first in the Centennial League Championship.
Hartwell was a six-year member of the varsity swimming team and also played soccer and ran track. A product of Mexico, N.Y., Hartwell led his team to Section III championships for three years. His top times were 47.81 in the 100 free and 1:43.91 in the 200 free. As a senior, he set a school record in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.81 and was a state qualifier in the event. After winning the 100 free, 200 free, 200 medley relay and 400 free relay he was selected as a member of the first team All-Section and was the Class B Swimmer of the Meet.
Mackiewicz, from Wallingford, Connecticut, holds four team records in the 500-yard free, 200-yard free relay, 100-yard fly and 100-yard backstroke. This season he posted top times of 52.70 in the 100 fly, 1:58.69 in the 200 fly and 1:58.44 in the 200 back. As a junior, he was named to the All-State and New Haven Register All-Area teams and was named Team MVP. He is also a two-time scholar athlete at Lyman Hall High School.
In just one year, James Martin left a big impression on Connecticut high school swimming. The St. Paul Catholic senior won two Class LL championships and was named the Connecticut Swimmer of the Year while becoming the fastest swimmer in the state in both the 200 (1:40.73) and 100 yard freestyle (45.67), taking home the State Open crown in each. Martin, from Bristol, Conn., was able to compete for his high school team, as St. Paul competed in a Co-op with the Bristol public schools for the first time this season. He holds the Co-op record in the 50 free (21.23), the 100 free and the 100 backstroke. He owns the conference-best time in the 100 and 200 free, as well. As a member of the Central Connecticut Aquatic team he was a junior national and sectional qualifier.
A native of Walnut Creek, Calif., McMahon was the captain of a New Orleans team that was a two-time Scholastic All-American team. He also placed in the top 24 of all three of his events at the Sun Belt Conference Championships. He posted top times in the 200 back (1:52.79) and 1:54.15 in the 200 IM this season. In high school, McMahon was a Speedo Sectional Qualifier in the 200- and 100-yard backstroke as well as the 100-yard fly and 200-yard IM.

This season he posted top times of 51.77 in the 100 back and 4:10.78 in the 400 IM. He was a Section III champion and named the section's Swimmer of the Meet. He owns the sectional record in the 200 medley and holds four school records. From eighth to 10th grade, he also swam in the Empire State Games.
Rutkowski will be close to his family as the Alden, N.Y., native comes to St. Bonaventure holding school records in the 100 back (58.70), 100 breast (59.49) and 200 IM (2:02.34). Winter Training Camp Invite
We are looking to include our alumni in our annual trek south in early January. We want to get some alums to come down on a Friday-Sunday to join us for some fun and to re-live those special training camp memories!!! We traditionally go to the Cocoa Beach area which would keep flights very cheap into Orlando. A golf tourney, team dinner and evening beach fire would be some of the activities. Alums would be invited to join us at all training sessions to help encourage the current team in their endeavors. More details will follow but the targeted date at this point would be January 7-9.

This is the stroke by stoke report of Chris Ekimoff's valiant return to the , not so welcoming, waters of competitive swimming. It was very entertaining reading that I had to share!!!
In a day when the excitement at Woodrow Wilson High School Aquatic Center was as palpable as a spring fog, a former legend in his own mind pushed himself to the limits of both mental reasoning and physical assertion.
After a brisk 2500 warm up in the Olympic-sized pool for the first time since January 2007, he approached the stationed lifeguard with a favor to ask. However, the highly certified and grossly overweight lifesaver debated that paying enough attention to time and film me would be dangerous to the less-able patrons. Alas, he would go undocumented into the abyss.
After a strong push-off towards the distant end, he felt light and fast, although keeping his stroke in line was difficult coming into the first turn. In what might have been the most technically sound flip turn in his illustrious career, the second fifty looked promising. A quick look at the clock going into the 2nd turn yieled an opening split of 1:04.
But the abyss began to take hold. Strokes turned to flailing arms, kicking turned into...nothing. As the third turn reared its ugly head, a gliding shark slowly turned into an orca whale -- equally efficient, but too large to continue swimming fast.
The last 50 came with another transformation, into the gentle giants of the sea, the manatee. As he slowly slapped his arms over the water, he knew he had failed the trial, but wished to give his best effort.
A final touch! Another quick glance at the clock: 2:16. Then ensued the wheezing, the coughing, and the run to the oversized hot tub. Maybe another day.

A-10 Helper Thanks!!!
Dear Parents and Friends,
As our swimming and diving seasons come to a close, I wanted to personally thank everyone for all you
did to make last week’s events so memorable for everyone. Whether you were working the pool deck as a
back-up timer or up in the stands cheering on our Bonnies, your presence and support is invaluable to our
program and the success of the meet. The enthusiasm and creativeness of your cheers and banners all help
make the championships so special to so many individuals. With all the different sport championships
I’ve been involved with over the years, I can honestly say that these championships, year in and year out,
are my favorite. And a large part of it has to do with the student-athletes and their families.
You should be very proud of your son or daughter for their accomplishments, whether it was winning a
medal or scoring a personal best. And though we all wished for two championship trophies on Saturday
evening, there is pride in consistently being two of the best programs in the conference. And, for many,
there is always next year!
I’ve received some inquiries about the dates for 2011. The Championships are scheduled for February 23rd
and 26th, 2011 at the Flickinger Center in Buffalo so please mark it on your calendars. We have also
submitted a bid for 2012 for the same corresponding week (the week of President’s Day). We will know if
we have support for this bid in the next coming months.
Finally, I want to thank you for entrusting your child to St. Bonaventure and our family. I know that you
and your child had a choice to make and that it is not always an easy one, especially when distance from
home can make it so difficult for you as parents. But we are very pleased that the choice was St.
Bonaventure and that they chose to continue their swimming and diving careers with us.
Thank you for your support and best wishes from our family to yours.
Sincerely,
Barbara Questa

2nd Place Good but not good enough!!
We completed the season with a second place finish for the fourth consecutive season after last winning it in 2006. UMass garnered the top spot, once again, with a very strong meet finishing with 814.5 as we trailed with 531.5 points just ahead of Duquesne 496, Fordham 474.5, LaSalle 382.5, Xavier 362, St. Louis 252 and George Washington 186.
It was a difficult final night as we were saying goodbye to the Duquesne men's team as they have been informed that they are being eliminated as of the completioin of this season. We have grown close to the Duquesne men over the past 5 seasons and ache for what they are going through. Despite this, we knew that they would be super-motivated to finish strong and ahead of us and had to dig in and try to get it done.
I would characterize our meet as very mixed with our results. We had many very strong performances, a lot of good ones and more subpar ones than normal. We have a lot of work to do and realize that the quest to improve begins today.

A-10's Wednesday Night "Could have been Better"
Some mixed results from the first night of racing. A third place finish in the 200 Medley Relay (Koenig, Murphy, Kundzik, Robinson)could have been better with a weak freestyle split that cost us but the ability is there. Mike Murphy finished 3rd in the 1 Meter Dive, then the 800 Free Relay (Rowan, Baker,Dansa, Murphy) finished third which should have been challenging for 2nd. Room for improvement is the moral of the story. We should be able to rally a solid session tomorrow if people have trust in their training and get themselves warmed-up properly. The events are the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free with the 200 free relay competed at night at finals.
Here is a link to the live results: http://www.star-meets.org/results/A-10/index.htm
After the first night we are in 2nd place behind UMass.

A Welcome Return to Western NY
Coming off our Winter Training in frigid Cocoa Beach the Bonnies men managed to handle Binghamton today in a meet at the Reilly Center 132-109. What has normally been a difficult meet for us coming off our training saw the Bonnies stand up a little better than usual under tough circumstances. On the boards, Mike Murphy and Trevor Herzog went 1-2 on both the 1 and 3 meter events. Sophomore Yi Liu also collected two wins in taking the 200 IM and 200 fly. Binghamton mounted a comeback taking the 100 free, 200 back and 500 free in a row but it was not enough to catch us after we opened the first half of the meet winning 6 of the first 8 events. Next up is a trip down to the Nations Capitol for a tilt with Georgetown on Saturday January 23 at 1:00.

100 x 100's
Monday saw our, somewhat annual, adventure of 100 x 100's. It is known as one of the more challenging water workouts of the season and kind of functions as the pinnacle of our Winter Training down here in sunny, but just getting warm, Florida. Elias Homerin and Kevin Murphy came the closest to completing the entire set but the set ended up winning with no sucessful completions.

Here is some video from our afternoon practice before our second swim. We came upon some dolphins in the river next to us playing with their food before eating it. We are hoping the weather is going to warm up tomorrow.

Jan 7/8
Here is a little video of the last couple of workouts. I will be heading out shortly to pick up All-star Alumni Ryan Hoffnagle who is coming in to visit for the weekend. It is my goal to offer this up to the alumni in the future to come down and join us for the weekend and reminisce about all of those wonderful training camps both at Bonas and Florida.
